Mobility with a clear conscience
As our mobility grows, so does the volume of traffic on the world’s roads – reason enough for Bayer to address this source of environmental pollution and develop climate-friendly solutions.

Flying without fuel – the Solar Impulse solar aircraft with innovative high-tech materials to reduce energy consumption.
The way we drive also plays a key role in the level of environmental pollution. This is demonstrated by the EcoCruiser – a driving simulator with an integrated environmental protection quiz. Visitors to BayKomm can use the EcoCruiser to learn techniques for cutting fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

The Solar Impulse consumes no fuel at all. This aircraft is operated exclusively by solar power – even at night. Bayer is supporting the two Swiss designers behind this ambitious development project. A number of the company’s specialty materials make the Solar Impulse particularly lightweight and stable. If all goes according to plan, the aircraft will fly non-stop around the world in 2013.

Alternative forms of propulsion such as solar energy are, however, just one way of ensuring the sustainable and futureproof transportation of passengers and goods around the globe.

Another is to make vehicles more economical in terms of fuel consumption. This can be achieved by using lightweight components – to replace glass, for example. Bayer’s polycarbonate Makrolon® can be used to make side, rear and panorama windows or entire roof modules. Several automakers have already discovered this weight-saving solution. And U.S. rail operator Amtrak has been using Makrolon® windows in its trains for years.

The fuel consumption of ships can be reduced, too. Incorporating Baytubes® carbon nanotubes in the coatings used on ships can significantly lower frictional resistance in the water. This is just one example of the innovative potential of cutting-edge nanotechnology.

Another result of growing mobility is that it is not always possible to see your doctor straight away or go to your local pharmacy every time you have a health problem. BayKomm’s exhibition room provides tips on exactly which medical supplies you should take with you on your travels.

Adventurous travelers should also know all about malaria – especially how to protect themselves against it. For example, it is important to use a mosquito net impregnated with long-acting insecticides to prevent bites during the night.

And your four-legged travel companions should not be forgotten either. Especially when on the move, it is important to take appropriate precautions against fleas, ticks and worms. Studies have revealed that three out of four dogs traveling from Germany to other countries are not adequately protected against parasites.
